Woman in Pakistan Mobbed Over Mistaken Arabic Text for Quran Verses
A woman in Lahore, Pakistan, faced a frightening ordeal after being accosted by a crowd who mistook the Arabic writing on her kurta for Quran verses. This misunderstanding led to her being accused of blasphemy and subsequently surrounded by a mob.
The woman, accompanied by her husband, was visiting a restaurant when the incident occurred. The crowd became agitated, demanding she remove the kurta. Thankfully, the police were called and intervened before the situation escalated.
Swift Police Intervention Averts Crisis
A video shared by the police shows the woman visibly distressed as the crowd surrounds her. Fortunately, a brave police officer, ASP Shehrbano Naqvi, stepped forward to calm the situation and escort the woman safely away from the mob.
Ms Naqvi later explained, “The woman was simply wearing a kurta with some Arabic writing on it. There was a misunderstanding, and the situation escalated.”
Apologies and Moving Forward
The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, was then taken to the police station. She expressed remorse for any unintentional offence caused and stated, “I had no intention of disrespecting anyone’s religious beliefs. I simply liked the design of the kurta.”
This incident highlights the importance of understanding and tolerance in society. While the situation could have turned violent, the quick intervention of the police and Ms Naqvi’s courageous actions thankfully prevented further escalation.
