The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is about to crown a champion, but cricket fans are already looking ahead to the 2024 T20 World Cup this summer. Pakistan has important warm-up matches against New Zealand and England before the big tournament in June.

Shahid Afridi Surprise Picks for the 2024 T20 World Cup?

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has a bold suggestion for the selectors. Could veterans Imad Wasim and Mohammed Amir be making a comeback for the T20 World Cup?

Mohammed Amir’s Case for Recall

Afridi, who led Pakistan to victory in the 2009 T20 World Cup, believes Amir still has plenty to offer. Amir retired from international cricket in 2020 due to disagreements with the team management. However, he impressed in the recent PSL season, taking 10 wickets for the Quetta Gladiators.

His bowling was particularly effective during the crucial powerplay overs, with a miserly economy rate of 7.3. He also shone in the death overs, picking up 8 wickets. Partnering him with young pace sensation Naseem Shah could create a dangerous bowling attack.

Wasim Open to Returning

Another player potentially returning is all-rounder Imad Wasim. After helping Islamabad reach the PSL final, Wasim, who retired from international cricket in 2023, expressed interest in playing in the World Cup if selected.

While his wicket tally in the PSL wasn’t high (7 wickets), his economy rate of 6.7 was outstanding. This makes him a valuable option for controlling the run flow with his economical bowling, especially with the new ball. He even chipped in with 107 runs at a brisk pace lower down the batting order.

Will the selectors listen to Afridi’s suggestions and gamble on experienced players like Amir and Wasim? Only time will tell, but their PSL performances have certainly given them a fighting chance.
