Meta Lays Off Employees in Facebook Messenger and Instagram

Tech giant Meta continues to cut costs, with its popular messaging app, Facebook Messenger, becoming the latest target in the company’s ongoing restructuring efforts. This news comes after several rounds of workforce reductions across the company in recent months.

The recent layoffs affected fewer than 50 employees and were reportedly due to a reorganization of Messenger’s operations. Similar cuts also impacted some employees working at Instagram, primarily in technical program manager (TPM) roles.

This streamlining effort follows Meta’s major layoffs in 2023, which saw over 20,000 employees let go. CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared 2023 as his “year of efficiency,” and it appears cost-cutting measures are continuing in 2024.

The ongoing restructuring has created a sense of unease among some Meta employees, with concerns about job security and a shift in company culture. This highlights the broader trend of layoffs in the tech industry, particularly in the wake of the pandemic and the increasing use of automation tools.
